We believe that if you stay where you are in this business, you get dropped. So we don’t do it. If we didn’t innovate relentlessly, we don’t think we could even look ourselves in the mirror. Last year, we introduced the radical three-spoke Specialized composite wheel, the most aerodynamic wheel in the world. What we have for this year may be even more of a lunge into the future. Our M2 metal matrix composite. M2 is the next generation in bicycle materials, and a generation ahead of where everybody else is today. M2 is light enough to seem almost weird at first, but at the same time it’s very stiff, and far stronger than aluminum. What does this do for you? It lets you accelerate. It lets you climb: it stands up remarkably to the strong rider. And as stiff as it is, it’s not going to beat you up. Plus, it makes for exceptionally predictable steering. As one of our R&D guys said, you haven’t felt it till you feel it. Then there’s the Specialized Frame System (SFS), it’s based on our own proprietary tubing, Designed solely for all our bicycles by one of the guys on our engineering team, Mark Dinucci. The outcome of his labors at the CAD terminal and out on two wheels is a unique approach to wall thickness, butting, shape, materials and weight reduction. What it results in, is delivery of forward motion with the least possible expenditure of human energy. The bikes also climb like some kind of crazed goat. One last thing: since SFS geometry is tailored to each frame size, handling is precisely right for the rider-and the bikes fit like a glove. Not long ago, we saw one of our R&D guys wearing a button that said, “innovate or die.” The next day, they all had them.
